We Went for a Walk

We went for a walk up the bright summer hill

Just to feel the pull of muscle and bone strong up, and

Of gravity strong down

Just to know our will in the act of walking

Solid and intent against the force of the Universe itself

Just to assert our own existence and to know that we are alive

Not dead and covered and rotting and subject

To forever and forget

We went walking up the hill toward the sun’s shining light

To know that submission in life is a choice

And so it is heartbreaking, humbling, beautiful and nearly impossible
